Cockroaches are flat, brownish or dark-colored, and fast-moving insects that undergo simple metamorphosis. Cockroach babies look like miniature versions of the adult. Cockroaches have a high reproductive potential. Thus female cockroaches can lay between 15 and 40 eggs at a time. Cockroaches are generally active at night and will seek cover during the day or when disturbed at night. They will eat anything not only human food and garbage.

Therefore, cockroaches tend to hide in areas that are attractive to them which include tight hiding spaces, available food, moisture, and warm and humid environments. Cockroaches will move mainly along intersections, “lines”, and edges such as the back edge of the shelf or the juncture of ceiling or a wall. Many times cockroaches will be found in kitchen cabinets and bathrooms.

German Cockroaches

German cockroaches are one of the most common insect pests in the United States. Adults are 1/2 to 5/8 of an inch long and though they have wings they do not fly. The German cockroach is most commonly found where food is handled and stored and will eat almost anything. Similarily to other types of cockroaches, these also tend to be concentrated in areas of high moisture because they need a steady source of water.

A sign of a cockroach infestation is if you see 5 to 10 adults on the countertop, females carrying egg capsules, many dark small dark babies, or a mix of adults and babies.

Tips/Prep for Cockroach Infestation:

Clean all areas where roaches frequent like cabinets, counter tops, sinks, behind and under refrigerators and stoves. Areas where cockroaches cluster you will see heavy black dots, make sure to clean this area thoroughly leaving nothing behind. All dead roaches should be cleared and not left behind.

In cases where there are huge to moderate amounts of roaches, a gel will be used for treatment.

In cases of heavy infestation, cabinets should be cleaned out and any other areas should be cleared of items as well. Treatments will consist of a spray, and will most likely need a re-treatment as well.
